WPW Picnic Update

Hi Fellow WPW Member,

As announced at our April and May meetings, our WPW picnic is coming up on Saturday, August 6, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Beaver County Airport. We had a nice initial response to our “Save The Date” announcement, and we are hoping that many of you will be able to join us for an afternoon of relaxation, picnic food, friendship, and possibly a plane ride! One of our members, Mike Silverman, is a long-time member of the Air Heritage Museum (AirHeritage.org) at the Beaver County Airport, and he and his colleagues are justifiably proud of the in-process and completed restorations of some historically-significant aircraft, some of which are airworthy. While not having much to do with woodworking, the venue seems like a wonderful place to have our picnic, and provide an interesting program, with Mike and some of his fellow restorers providing tours that will allow us an up-close look at their progress with the planes. There is also an on-site museum filled with photos, artifacts, and historical information. Questions and looks of astonishment are encouraged!

Here are the particulars for the picnic:

The picnic will be held at the Air Heritage hanger & museum at the Beaver County airport. Their website, AirHeritage.org, has complete information about the museum, planes, and directions. The street address to be used for searching Google or Apple maps is 35 Piper Street, Beaver Falls, PA 15010 for the museum and hanger. As you near the airport there are many signs for the Air Heritage Museum (turn at the Nissan dealership).
We will be allowed to set up tables and chairs inside the hanger, so we won’t have to be outside in the sun. Bathroom facilities are available. It’s likely to be hot, so please dress accordingly.
So that all of our members can enjoy the picnic this year (instead of having to “work”), we’ve arranged for a caterer to take care of everything except dessert, at a slightly greater cost than in previous years. We welcome you to bring your spouse/partner, significant other, and children. The WPW will pick up half of the per-person cost for all paid-up WPW members and their guests, and we ask that you pay the other half, which is $8 per adult and $4 per child (12 and under). We will collect the money at the picnic.
For each “family” attending, please plan on bringing a dessert for 6-8 that you can share. This can be something that you’ve made or bought, and there will probably be leftovers for you to take home.
The club will have some tables and chairs at the hanger, but if you have your own folding chair(s) and/or picnic table, we would appreciate it if you would bring it, just in case we come up short.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, it’s now time to immediately RSVP so that we can place the final food order with the caterer. Please send an email to Bill James (Bill@JamesWoodWorks.com) with the word PICNIC in the subject line. Please provide your name, how many will be attending, and a mobile phone number (or home if you don’t have a mobile). I will reply “Got It” to all RSVPs sent, so that you know that it didn’t get caught in a Spam filter. The official deadline is this Thursday, July 28, at midnight, but please, please, please just do it now while you’re thinking about it. If you have a problem committing before then for some reason, just explain your circumstances in your email and we’ll figure something out.

Here are the particulars for a possible plane ride:

Here is the plane ride information as coordinated by CW Kreimer. If you’re interested in doing this, please contact him directly at the phone number/email below. The reservation deadline has been extended to this Friday, July 29 at 5:00 PM, so please let him know asap.

The WPW has made arrangements with Aces Aviation (http://www.acesbvi.com ) for members to take a 20 minute flight (weather permitting) in a DA-20 two-seater aircraft for $60 with a flight instructor. You will be at the controls and will be able to gently bank the plane while it is in flight. There is also a four-seater DA-40 aircraft that up to three people can go for a 20 minute flight (with an instructor) for $94.50 that can be split across two or three people. Only one person will be at the controls and two will be passengers in the two seats in the back of the plane. There are no age restrictions on flying. Children under 18 will need to have their parents sign a release at the time of the flight.

Aces Aviation is a 3 minute walk from the Air Heritage Museum. We have a maximum of 21 flights in the two-seater DA-20 and 7 flights in the four-seater DA-40. Your flight time will be assigned on a first-come / first-served basis. If you want to fly (weather permitting) you need to send a check payable to Western Pennsylvania Woodworkers to CW Kreimer, 6557 Bartlett Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15217. You also need to send a copy of the front of your driver’s license for proof of who you are to the FAA due to 9/11 fall-out. Please include your telephone number and email address. You will be assigned your flight time based on the order that your check is received. No flight reservations can be accepted after July 29. You will be advised of your flight time by August 3rd. For any questions regarding the flying – please contact cw@kreimers.com or 412-401-8201. Given the closeness of the deadline, calling/emailing CW before mailing a check is probably a good idea.

Cancelation – if for ANY reason you choose not to fly — your money will be returned to you. Flights are subject to weather conditions and will be canceled if it is windy or extremely overcast. If this occurs, you will receive a full refund as well.

Thanks,

CW
